The White Screen of Doom

If you’re reading this, you have probably noticed that The Table Has Shoes (and Other Ambiguities) has a new look.
I’d like to tell you that this was deliberate, and planned, and that I’m thrilled about the launch of the new look – but that’s just not the case. Because Monday afternoon I was trying to make some changes to my code and got the dreaded white screen of WordPress death. The Table Has Shoes was gone. All that remained was a white screen.
I tried not to panic. I got in touch with Whitney right away, because she recently had the same thing happen to her. She did help, but the longer things went with no blog, the more freaked out I became. Then it occurred to me that I run a backup plug-in on my blog database: wp-db-backup. I felt sure there must be a way to recover my lost blog through this plug-in. And I was right. The backup files saved my blog, and the only data I seem to have lost are uploaded pictures (a pain to replace, but replaceable) and my installed plug-ins (again, a pain to re-do, but also something I can fix). If you are a blogger and you don’t backup your database at least once a week, PLEASE start backing up! I would probably be inconsolable if I had been unable to recover my database, as I imagine any blogger with years-worth of lost posts would be.
I’m still working on a few changes that were long overdue anyway. I hope all my loyal readers approve of the new look – I put many hours into finding something I felt had the best fit – and will bear with me while I continue to tweak things. As always, if you have an opinion, please share!

I’m glad that you managed to recover and that you weren’t faced with the horrific thing that I was… recovering from a corrupt file!
I agree, we should form a support group for WSOD-receivers.
Whitney´s last blog ..Bibliophile: The Man Who Invented Christmas
I think there could be a niche for it!
People who do not own/run a blog have no idea just how upsetting and draining the WSOD is!
