We’ve Got the Rehearsal Dinner Blues

This will probably seem ironic to those of you who know me personally: I am pretty far behind in our wedding rehearsal dinner planning.  It’s not for lack of trying – it’s just that Alex and I have been foiled at every turn.  The result is that we still don’t have even a small inkling for where we will be holding this event.

See, we had this fantastic idea for the rehearsal dinner (hereafter referred to as the ‘RD’).  We were going to have it at Santa Fe, a cute Mexican restaurant in Tarrytown where Alex and I went all the time the first year we dated.  It was going to be perfect: the venue would be significant to us, the food would be great (and decently priced), and the feel of the event would be completely different from the feel of our wedding the following day.  Sadly, when Alex went to Santa Fe to book the date he was told they don’t like to book parties on Friday or Saturday nights.  The answer was “no.”

I was floored… crushed, even!  How could a restaurant turn down a 50 person guarantee in this economy?  Whatever the reason, we were back to the drawing board.

I posted a question in The Knot’s community forum, asking if anyone had advice on RDs in our area.  I got a resounding “try the Striped Bass” for an answer.  We were also advised to check out the restaurants at the Westchester Marriott.

So Alex and I trotted over to Ruth’s Chris Steak House (in the Marriott) to check that option out.  I’ve got to say, they were really great.  The food and service there is impeccable, and they were very welcoming towards Alex and I – even gave us complimentary champagne as a congratulations on our engagement.  We would love to hold our RD there.  The problem is the price… we would have to cut our guest list to about 30 people, and even then we would be pretty far over budget.

Since we’d prefer not to cut guests from the RD guest list, I checked out the Striped Bass’ website for information on catered events.  Their prices are a little bit better than Ruth’s Chris, but we’d still be over budget and in need of cutting the guest list if we held the RD there.  We’ve also never eaten there, which would make me nervous, therefore necessitating that we go eat there at least once before booking.  That means even MORE money spent on the RD!

And so Alex and I are still searching for a venue for our RD.  The person Alex spoke to at Santa Fe was not the manager or owner, so we’re thinking about going back and asking to speak with someone who has more authority.  Other than that, though, we are totally out of ideas!

Ugh! That sounds awful!!! I can’t believe that The Santa Fe is so weird about when they’ll schedule private events. I would definitely go back and talk to someone with more authority. Maybe the person you guys talked to originally just didn’t know what they were talking about.

Yeah, I still haven’t quite gotten over the response from them either! I think Alex was going to go there today and try to talk to them – keep you posted!

The RD is something I totally freaked out about but in the end really didn’t need to. I’m sure you guys will find the perfect solution :)
